Production Conference 2008
Hosted by the Ott Planetarium and Weber State University

August 20-24 the Ott Planetarium will host the 2008 MUG Conference, focusing on Production for the Small Planetarium.

The 2008 Production Conference is made possible by these fine sponsors:

Put Our Experience to Work

Since 2006 we've been developing a low cost, scaleable, platform-independent production pipeline. As of May 9, we have produced over 250 minutes of fulldome video with our pipeline!

As a conference attendee you will have full, hands-on access to our tools, equipment, and knowledge base. After a bit of training, you will plan and create your own fulldome video project. At the end of the conference, you'll walk away with a collection of everyone's projects and source files!

Our Facility and Equipment

Our star theater seats 60 under a 9.1 m (30 ft) perforated aluminum dome. In December 2004 we upgraded our main projector from a 1969 Spitz A4 to a Konica-Minolta Mediaglobe. The Mediaglobe upgrade replaced not only our star projector, but over 30 slide and special effects projectors. Shortly after the Mediaglobe installation, we began producing original content.

In 2006 the Planetarium received a $1M Congressional Earmark to fund the development of educational programs. Part of this grant was used to purchase a 128 CPU render cluster and 16 high performance workstations for scientific computing and starshow production.

CPL: Computational Physics Lab
16 Quad CPU Mac Pro Workstations for your hands-on training and production.

WRCRS: Weber Render Cluster and Research Supercomputer
32 rack mounted Quad CPU Xserve servers and a 5 TB RAID. The WRCRS cluster contains 128 CPU cores, for a combined speed of 340 GHz.

When it comes to rendering, we don't mess around.

Lodging and Transportation

Our University Conference Liaison got us a killer deal at the hotel! It's just $65.00 a night for our conference. Conference attendees will be responsible for making hotel reservations (be sure to mention that you're attending the Mediaglobe Users Group Production Conference at Weber State University).

Hampton Inn and Suites, Ogden, Utah (Website)

We've got your transportation covered during the conference (we have a bus). So you don't need a rental car. BUT we need to get you from the Salt Lake City Airport to the hotel in Ogden (67km / 42 mi). Here are some options:

1. Use our brand new, totally sweet commuter rail! One-way cost is about five bucks.
  • At the SLC Airport, catch UTA Bus 550 to the Salt Lake City "Intermodal Hub" (AKA: Transit Center).
  • At the Transit Center, catch a Front Runner train going North to the Ogden Transit Center.
  • From the Ogden Transit Center, walk three blocks East (toward the mountains) along 24th Street. The hotel is at 24th and Washington Blvd.
  • We can give you a ride from the Ogden Transit Center if needed. Please call us to make arrangements.

2. Hire a van to take you to the hotel in Ogden. It'll cost you about $32 plus tip, one-way.
Here is a map outlining event locations and transit information.
