The Grand Staircase
The Southern Utah/Northern Arizona region possesses a great geologic history as revealed by the stepwise progression through the different layer of the Grand Canyon, up through the rocks of Zion Canyon, Bryce Canyon and to the Aquarius Plateau. These series of layers (also known as strata) help to form "The Grand Staircase". These layers, formed by deposition of sediments, have been subjected to warping and erosion; rocks at the very bottom of the Grand Canyon have undergone metamorphosis where rock can actually bend, break, and be carved away by other rock as well as the by the weather.
Rocks exposed in the Grand Canyon range in age from 2000 million to 600 million years and were deposited in warm shallow seas and near-shore environments. The nearly 40 identified rock layers of Grand Canyon form one of the most studied geologic columns in the world.
