Minerals

A mineral is a naturally occurring substance formed through geological processes that has a characteristic chemical composition, a highly ordered atomic structure and specific physical properties. The minerals are grouped in accordance with their chemical composition. The groups include: carbonates, sulphides, halides, silicates, sulphates, phosphates, hydroxides, oxides and native elements. Some of the characteristics which are used in identification are:

  • luster
  • hardness
  • cleavage
  • specific gravity
  • crystal form
  • crystal systems
  • symmetry
