Saber-Tooth Tiger
The saber-tooh tiger (Smilodon californicus) belongs to the felindae - the cat family. There were predominant on the northern continents and in South America during the Pleistocene Period.
The upper canine teeth are exceedingly long for stabbing and slincing; the lower canines are somewhat reduced. The flange at the front end of the lower jaw serves as a gaurd for the upper canines. The jaw is so constructed that it could be opened to nearly a right angle. The sabers were very effective in slicing wounds which caused copious bleeding. It is believed that they preyed mainly upon thick-skinned animals such as Mastodons and Elephants. The rarity of these large "Pachyderms" may have been the reason for their extinction by the end of the Pleistocene Era.
